2016 winners

Paul Chapman

Pontypool born and bred Paul works for Freeman as Operations Manager and is responsible for delivering innovative brand experiences that secure results.

Paul recently completed an NVQ Level 5 in Leadership and Management, a qualification that he cites as being invaluable as it has helped him become a better Manager.

Sally Knock, Paul’s Training Advisor at Acorn, said: “Paul is exactly the type of learner who benefits from completing a Higher Apprenticeship. Since the course, his confidence and management skills have grown and developed in spite of massive changes – he deserves to be learner of the month and I’m very proud of him.”

Megan Edwards

Megan works for Community Union as a Regional Administrator and with support from Acorn recently completed an NVQ Level 3 Business Administration qualification.

As a result, Megan has been made permanent by Community Union and is working for the trade union’s Cardiff base.

Ann Nicholas, Acorn’s Head of Corporate Development, said: “Megan should be very proud of herself; she’s pushed aside her nerves and produced various high-standard assignments whilst working full time – she’s come on leaps and bounds.”

Corey Rees

22-year-old Corey works for Natural Resource Wales (NRW) as an ICT Desktop and Technical Service Analyst Apprentice and is expected to learn on-the-job.

With support from Acorn, Corey has been working to secure his Advanced Apprenticeship for IT Software Web and Telecoms Professionals.

Since joining NRW, Corey has become a valuable employee and recently came up with a cost effective way on how to encrypt data without using iron keys. NRW now uses normal flash drives with the use of bit locker as the encryption, saving the Government body an impressive £84 per ion key!

Dean Matthews

Pontypridd-based Dean works for Zurich Insurance as a Trading Underwriter and recently completed an Apprenticeship in Providing Financial Services – General Insurance Level 3 with support from Acorn.

Since completing the apprenticeship, Dean has built up his presentation skills and has passed his CII (Chartered Insurance Institute) exams.

Julie Rice, Dean’s Team Manager at Zurich, said: “Dean is a really valuable member of my team; he always displays a positive attitude and contributes well to any task. Having successfully completed his apprenticeship, Dean continues to build and influence strong broker relationships – everyone needs a Dean in their team.”

Niall Perks

Acorn apprentice Niall has gone from working in a fish and chip shop to developing a promising IT and Telecoms career in the space of 14 months.

19-year-old Niall works for Cwmbran-based Siphon Networks and with the support of Acorn is currently working towards securing an IT Software Web and Telecoms Professional Apprenticeship.

Supported by Acorn Advisor Gareth Davies, last year, Niall took part in the World Skills UK regional competition in Cardiff and was named Foundation Apprentice of the Year at 2016’s Apprenticeship Awards Cymru.

Tom Booth

Tom currently works for the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) in Newport and is working towards securing an Advanced Apprenticeship for IT Software, Web & Telecomms Professionals with support from Acorn.

Since joining IPO, Tom has achieved a number of milestones; including dealing with security documentation and helping the Government body secure the ISO 27001 Information Security Management Standard.
