'Learning Pathways 14 -19' is the Welsh Government's way of providing a more flexible and balanced approach to the education of 14-19 year olds in Wales and developing a wide range of experiences to meet the needs of young people.
All 14-19 year olds in Wales will soon become entitled to their own learning pathway, which will offer young people much more choice in their education. Learners will have more options from a greater range of courses than ever before.
Acorn is currently working with a number of local authorities offering a wide range learning programmes designed to meet their future goals. Our programmes link classroom learning with real work experience, in most cases, and include:
Welsh Baccalaureate support (Principal Lines of Learning and NVQ or QCF Equivalent)
We can support schools on the delivery of the Welsh Baccalaureate via both the Principal Lines of Learning and QCF equivalent elements within Retail, Business Administration and Finance.
BTEC Workskills – Unit credit, Award, Certificate and Diploma
The BTEC Workskills Programme is available at three levels; Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2 (Unit Credit, Award or Certificate Level).
These units have been developed in direct response to the Government’s Leitch Review and following consultation with schools, colleges, employers and training providers. The programme focuses on employability skills.
The programme can be delivered as short courses focussing on Unit Credits or as a more extensive programme delivered over one or two years, depending on the level and delivery model selected by the school. This programme is flexible and allows for a school to in effect design their own BTEC. There is a choice of twenty-five difference modules and dependant on the selected modules some will require work experience.
To achieve the BTEC at the Award Level the student will need to complete three credits which equals 30 GLH, to achieve at Certificate Level requires thirteen credits which equals 130 GLH. Unit certification is also available within this qualification and the number of GLH will depend on the unity selected.
Acorn will meet with any interested school or cluster of schools to develop a be-spoke approach.

All pathways can be designed to suit learners’ needs, whatever stage of their education or the future career aspirations. The programme options range from short courses to a more extensive programme delivered over one or two years depending on the level, qualification outcome and delivery model selected by the school. Delivery models are linked to the required outcome and age of the learner; these can be classroom taught days only or be a mixture of classroom and vocational work placement. Acorn will work with your school to establish a pathway that fits within your curriculum timetable and budget.

Customer Service / Care Pathways
We offer a range of pathway options to support the development of customer service skills. All pathways can be designed to suit learners’ needs, whatever stage of their education or the future career aspirations.
The programme options range from short courses to a more extensive programme delivered over one or two years depending on the level, qualification outcome and delivery model selected by the school. Delivery models are linked to the required outcome and age of the learner; these can be classroom taught days only or be a mixture of classroom and vocational work placement. Acorn will work with your school to establish a pathway that fits within your curriculum timetable and budget.
The key benefit of this subject pathway to the learner is the transferability and the fact that these skills can be used in any sector of the employment market making them attractive to employers and learners alike. Employers recognise that customer service professionalism has never been more important than it is today and therefore they place high value on these skills when recruiting new staff.
Administration and Finance Pathway
The purpose of the programme in business, administration and finance is to introduce learners to the world of business, administration and finance and to enable progress to related studies or employment in the wider business sector.
The programme in business, administration and finance has particular relevance to 14-19 year olds who seek to acquire knowledge and skills in the broad context of business, administration and finance and to progress to further education and higher education and / or a range of business roles. Principle learning provides all learners with the knowledge, skills and understanding essential to the sector along with key work preparation and customer service skills.
Modules will include: Business Enterprise, Business Administration, Personal Finance and Financial Services, Teams and Communication in Business, Customer Service, and Preparing for Work.

Short Sharp Courses / Employment Skills / The World of Work
Acorn offers a number of one, two or three day programmes designed to have maximum impact on a given subject area. Dependant of the programmes selected these can lead to recognised qualifications or just give an awareness of a subject area linked back to a core subject choice of a pupil.
The one, two or three day programmes can be delivered more flexibly to meet curriculum needs i.e. in twighlight sessions or in lesson block timings.

Vocational / Multi Route Pathways
A one-year programme based on one day per week.
The programme is designed to give a generic introduction into the world of work with a specific focus on the vocational option selected by the pupil.
The programme consists of six workshop days, delivered one day per week, for the first six weeks to prepare the pupil for working within industry. During this preparation stage the pupils will achieve the Foundation Certificate in Health & Safety to ensure a good understanding of safe working practices within the workplace. They will also achieve the Customer Service Certificate at Level 2 which will provide a good foundation of the expectations of customers within the world of work.
The programme theory is underpinned with thirty days (one day per week) vocational experience where the individual pupil will put into practice the theory and be assessed against the NVQ Level 1 or CQF equivalent in the occupational area they select. The programme has three additional classroom review days which are built into the programme at key times, normally at the start of a term, and the final review day at programme end.
The one day vocational work experience allocation indicated in the above delivery model can be extended dependant on the individual pupil’s needs i.e. making the programme two day, three day or four days per week.
